Group therapy usually consists of 6-8 members and typically meet weekly for 80 minute sessions. At Austin Mindfulness Center our groups are heavily influenced in mindfulness-based interventions and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in particular. Members are encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings freely and honestly in order to provide opportunities to learn with and from other people, to understand one’s own patterns of thought and behavior and those of others. Through the group sharing process, members connect with the common humanity they all share and often find this to be a great benefit to know that they are not alone in their suffering. Members learn not only to understand their own issues but also become "therapeutic helpers" for other members, and this is the beauty of group work!
Group therapy is a cost effective form of treatment, and even more so at Austin Mindfulness Center since all our rates are considerably reduced to accommodate all income levels. Group rates are $30 per 80 minute session, although we ask that closed groups, which begin and end with the same members for a set number of sessions, be paid up front. This is important to protect the cohesiveness and trust between group members. A minimum of 4 group members are required.
